Newspaper Records: Finding the Unexpected

By: Sarah Day, AG®

Sometimes newspapers hold unexpected surprises. Today I was searching for a specific obituary dated 15 May 1917 in Indiana newspapers when I stumbled across a different article, one that I wasn't expecting to find.

The article was published in The Fort Wayne News (Fort Wayne, Indiana) on 15 May 1917, and while it started on the first page, the rest was found on page six. The line that originally caught my attention while searching for the other article was: "The war today claimed its first distinguished American."

After looking at the title of the article and continuing to read, I realized the person in question was Joseph H. Choate. While I was unfamiliar with the man, that did not diminish the importance of who he may have been. He was an American lawyer and diplomat, and according to the newspapers, one of the first, if not the first, American casualties of the war. While he did not die on the battlefield, he would die of the other effects of war.

It is remarkable to think of this article in its time and place. It was published approximately one month after World War I started, and so can provide helpful context to see what was on the hearts and minds of the people at that time. It highlights the impact of war beyond fighting in the trenches.

This article also teaches a lesson for genealogists. It is always important to keep context in mind when researching ancestors. While keeping dates and major events in mind (like World War I) it can also be useful to read through the other stories in the newspaper and see what the people in the community of the ancestor or other people we are researching were concerned about, excited about, or just writing about. This helps us gain a deeper understanding of their world and context, enhancing our research for and about them.
